Tasting Notes

On the back side of the Hossfeld Vineyard lies a steeply terraced block of old vine Cabernet Sauvignon that sits across a gorge from a 19th century miniature Roman coliseum. Like this landmark, the 2009 rendition of Coliseum Cabernet is a pure mix of power and grace delivered seamlessly to the glass. Dark purple to the rim, immediately you are drawn to the core of this wine which is comprised of crushed dark fruits, floral notes, anise and subtle spices from perfectly seasoned French oak barrels. The mid palate embraces a multilayered texture, loads of soft and supple tannin and well integrated oak followed by a cocoa powder finish that takes this wine to the next level. It is a young and eager wine at this point, so cellaring for 4-5 years is recommended. Look for it to evolve further for up to 20 years.

The History of the Coliseum Vineyard

Twenty years ago people thought Henry Hossfeld was crazy because of the slope and the solid rock he was trying to grow vines on in the south-eastern Napa hills in an area known as Soda Canyon.  In fact, at planting, each vine hole was fractured into the terraces with a stick of dynamite. This dramatic site, steep and terraced like a Roman Coliseum has distinctive volcanic soils and as such, the resulting Cabernet fruit is also quite distinctive; structured graphite and herbal scented, compelling flavors. Today, we reap wines with massive fruit extraction, inky black color, and powerful tannins.
