Carter Cellars Coliseum Block Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

Tasting Notes

Our 2006 Coliseum Block Cab is another in an impressive line of well-behaved brutes. Massive, dense black fruits pull in alongside currants, dried herbs, plums, and bittersweet chocolate to form a powerhouse Cabernet that brings the senses to attention.

"A strong effort, the dense ruby/purple-tinged 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Coliseum Block exhibits classic aromas of black currants, cigar tobacco, blueberries, and lead pencil shaving. Beautifully proportioned and full-bodied with moderately high tannins, it is still young and unevolved, so 3-4 years of bottle age is recommended. It should evolve for 20+ years."

Map of the Coliseum Vineyard

The History of the Coliseum Vineyard

Twenty years ago people thought Henry Hossfeld was crazy because of the slope and the solid rock he was trying to grow vines on in the south-eastern Napa hills in an area known as Soda Canyon.  In fact, at planting, each vine hole was fractured into the terraces with a stick of dynamite. This dramatic site, steep and terraced like a Roman Coliseum has distinctive volcanic soils and as such, the resulting Cabernet fruit is also quite distinctive; structured graphite and herbal scented, compelling flavors. Today, we reap wines with massive fruit extraction, inky black color, and powerful tannins.
