Carter Cellars Coliseum Block Cabernet Sauvignon 2003

Tasting Notes

This wine is dark and completely opaque, garnet in color. The nose is deep and rich with black cherry, cigar box, and cola aromas. The palate of this wine is dark and sweet from the new French oak used in ageing. You will find perfect balance of the black cherry flavors and the subtle earthiness on the palate.

"A dense, opaque ruby in color, this wine has a brooding nose of black cherry, tobacco, and cola aromas. On the tongue it has a lovely, silky mouthfeel with primary flavors of black cherry and sweet pipe tobacco. The tannic structure is beautifully smooth, though solid, and the wine is nicely balanced. Tobacco and vanilla notes continue through a nice finish."

Map of the Coliseum Vineyard

The History of the Coliseum Vineyard

Twenty years ago people thought Henry Hossfeld was crazy because of the slope and the solid rock he was trying to grow vines on in the south-eastern Napa hills in an area known as Soda Canyon.  In fact, at planting, each vine hole was fractured into the terraces with a stick of dynamite. This dramatic site, steep and terraced like a Roman Coliseum has distinctive volcanic soils and as such, the resulting Cabernet fruit is also quite distinctive; structured graphite and herbal scented, compelling flavors. Today, we reap wines with massive fruit extraction, inky black color, and powerful tannins.
