Carter Cellars Beckstoffer To Kalon - 'The Three Kings' 2010
We were offered a new block on of old vine clone 7 in 2010 and we jumped all over it. Located in the western bench land toward the Mayacamas range, we knew we had another gem in the making from this historic Napa Valley vineyard. The legendary old guard clone throws off an amazingly deep ruby color accompanied with purple hues. It has a rich and savory nose of blackberry mole’, huckleberries, pencil shavings and lightly toasted graham crackers. The mid palate is heroic, loaded with rounded tannins that seem perfectly embedded within the core of this wine. Seamless and loaded with waves of decadent Cabernet Sauvignon fruit, this wine borders on stunning. The magnum opus of this wine is its wild yet orchestrated delivery of the above notes that is the definition of purity and balance.
Stephen Tanzer considered this to be one of the best Carter Cellars to date, scoring it 96 to 93 points in a recent barrel tasting.
"Deep ruby. Penetrating aromas of blueberry, candied violet and minerals. Dense and silky on the palate, with enticing floral lift to the flavors of raspberry and milk chocolate. In spite of the late harvest, this wine gives the impression of a lower pH than the other two Carter cuvees from To Kalon. Finishes with superb, chocolatey, palate-staining length and big, fully ripe tannins that reach the incisors. This looks to be the best set of releases to date from Carter Cellars.quot; - Barrel Sample
96 - 93 Points ~ Stephen Tanzer
" Deftly handled, this packs a potent mix of extracted fruit, showing tiers of blackberry, anise, crushed rock, mocha and espresso, all supported by rich tannins. Exciting to drink."

The History of the To Kalon Vineyard
The Beckstoffer portion of the historic original To Kalon Vineyard in the Oakville AVA was purchased from Beaulieu Vineyard in 1993. Beaulieu had purchased the property from the Crabb estate in 1940 and called it their Beaulieu Vineyard No. 4. Napa Pioneer Hamilton Crabb first planted the vineyard in 1868 and it has produced some of the Napa Valley's best red grapes ever since. Replanted after phylloxera by Beckstoffer from 1994 to 1997 to multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with modern trellising and closer vine spacing, the vineyard produces several luxury award winning vineyard designated wines. These vineyard designated Cabernet Sauvignon wines include Schrader Cellars, Paul Hobbs, Provenance, Realm and of course, Carter Cellars.
