Carter Cellars Hossfeld Coliseum Red Blend 2015

Tasting Notes

Aromas of crushed red fruit cherries, briary fruits, and violets are matched with an electric red hue. The abundant natural acidity derived from the vineyard coupled with extreme extraction, frames an amazing palate that highlights ripe red fruits, cocoa and cinnamon. The complex and layered finish is wrapped in ripe, lush tannins that showcase the best traits of a Merlot and Cabernet blend. Year after year this proves to be a very stunning wine.

"The 2015 Hossfeld Coliseum (80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon) is a big, sexy beast of a wine. Currants, black cherries, chocolate, and leafy herbs/underbrush all soar from the glass of this full bore, pedal-to-the-metal beauty that has terrific purity of fruit as well as sweet tannin. It’s already impossible to resist yet will cruise for 15+ years."

The History of the Coliseum Vineyard

Twenty years ago people thought Henry Hossfeld was crazy because of the slope and the solid rock he was trying to grow vines on in the south-eastern Napa hills in an area known as Soda Canyon.  In fact, at planting, each vine hole was fractured into the terraces with a stick of dynamite. This dramatic site, steep and terraced like a Roman Coliseum has distinctive volcanic soils and as such, the resulting Cabernet fruit is also quite distinctive; structured graphite and herbal scented, compelling flavors. Today, we reap wines with massive fruit extraction, inky black color, and powerful tannins.
