Carter Cellars Hossfeld Coliseum Red Blend 2013

Tasting Notes

Brilliant deep crimson colors are met by aromas of crushed dark cherries, briary fruits, and violets. The abundant natural acidity derived from th evineyard coupled with a concentrated extraction, frames an amazing midpalate that highlights ripe red fruits, cocoa and cinnamon. The complex and layered finish is wrapped in ripe, lush tannins that showcase the best traits of a Merlot and Cabernet blend. Year after year this proves to be a very stunning wine.

"The last baby is the 2013 Proprietary Red Blend Hossfeld Coliseum, a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is Carter’s plump Pomerol style of wine that is Petrus-like, with juicy, mocha, black cherry, blackcurrant fruit, luscious, sweet tannins, and a juicy, hedonistic mouthfeel and long finish."

Map of the Coliseum Vineyard

The History of the Coliseum Vineyard

Twenty years ago people thought Henry Hossfeld was crazy because of the slope and the solid rock he was trying to grow vines on in the south-eastern Napa hills in an area known as Soda Canyon.  In fact, at planting, each vine hole was fractured into the terraces with a stick of dynamite. This dramatic site, steep and terraced like a Roman Coliseum has distinctive volcanic soils and as such, the resulting Cabernet fruit is also quite distinctive; structured graphite and herbal scented, compelling flavors. Today, we reap wines with massive fruit extraction, inky black color, and powerful tannins.
