Tasting Notes

The 2011 season proved to be an ideal vintage to produce a predominately Merlot based red blend. This vineyard’s rocky and stressed soils combined with its orientation to the sun were a beautiful match for a mild vintage. Dark crimson in color, it has great clarity and is joined by aromas of crushed raspberries, bitter chocolate, brown spices and talc. Natural acidity and extraction always play a huge roll in this wine due to its small berries and 2011 was no exception. On the mid palate, red fruit concentration combines with substantial yet rounded tannins that embrace this wine to reveal its full potential. The finish is diligent and smooth combining with the above notes to make this one of California’s most amazing Bordeaux blends. A very stunning wine. Cellar for 4-6 years to enjoy this wine as it hits its stride.

The History of the Coliseum Vineyard

Twenty years ago people thought Henry Hossfeld was crazy because of the slope and the solid rock he was trying to grow vines on in the south-eastern Napa hills in an area known as Soda Canyon.  In fact, at planting, each vine hole was fractured into the terraces with a stick of dynamite. This dramatic site, steep and terraced like a Roman Coliseum has distinctive volcanic soils and as such, the resulting Cabernet fruit is also quite distinctive; structured graphite and herbal scented, compelling flavors. Today, we reap wines with massive fruit extraction, inky black color, and powerful tannins.
