Carter Cellars Hossfeld Coliseum 2006
A rich blend of Cabernet, Merlot, Petite Verdot, and Petite Sirah, this bright wine plunges the palate into blue and purple fruits – black cherries, plums, and blackberries. The flavors are dense and persistent, yielding to a balanced, long-lasting finish.
"Pours an opaque crimson red. Nose is still very tight, revealing hints of red fruit, some strawberry, charred oak and sandlewood. Palate hits you with a wall of tannins, but give you glimpses of what promises to be a good wine, as the quality of the fruit is evident. The juicy red fruit peaked out more as it sat in the glass ... Very impressed with the well developed midpalate and 30 second finish. Looking forward to trying again in a couple years. 91 now, but likely to gain a point or two with time. "

The History of the Coliseum Vineyard
Twenty years ago people thought Henry Hossfeld was crazy because of the slope and the solid rock he was trying to grow vines on in the south-eastern Napa hills in an area known as Soda Canyon. In fact, at planting, each vine hole was fractured into the terraces with a stick of dynamite. This dramatic site, steep and terraced like a Roman Coliseum has distinctive volcanic soils and as such, the resulting Cabernet fruit is also quite distinctive; structured graphite and herbal scented, compelling flavors. Today, we reap wines with massive fruit extraction, inky black color, and powerful tannins.
