Carter Cellars Coliseum Block Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Scant yields in 2010 and a perfect ending to a long harvest created another heroic wine from this famed vineyard block. Purple-amethyst to the rim in the glass, aromas of fig compote, currants, macadamia nuts and anise envelop the senses. The mid palate takes front stage at the moment with a vein of savoriness and finesse; it is loaded with notes of dried dark fruits, creosote, wood spice and loam. The finish is propelled from the edgy, rebellious nature this wine is known for by framing lively acidity and precision in an elegant package. Similar to the 2009 in viscosity, look for a longer ageing curve on this wine due to its deep concentration of Cabernet Sauvignon fruit.
"The focus is on pure, dense, rich red berry character, delivering cherry, raspberry and red licorice flavors, with subtle earth and crushed rock notes, as well as roasted herbs. All in all a terrific mix of power and finesse."

" The sensational 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Coliseum Block displays a dense blue/purple color as well as copious notes of licorice, acacia flowers, blackberries and blueberries, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, supple tannins and terrific purity, texture and a 45-second finish. Drink this stunner over the next 10-15 years. "

The History of the Coliseum Vineyard
Twenty years ago people thought Henry Hossfeld was crazy because of the slope and the solid rock he was trying to grow vines on in the south-eastern Napa hills in an area known as Soda Canyon. In fact, at planting, each vine hole was fractured into the terraces with a stick of dynamite. This dramatic site, steep and terraced like a Roman Coliseum has distinctive volcanic soils and as such, the resulting Cabernet fruit is also quite distinctive; structured graphite and herbal scented, compelling flavors. Today, we reap wines with massive fruit extraction, inky black color, and powerful tannins.
